Twenty six years ago we started UMMM Ice Cream Parlor, it feels like it is the first year. As we reflected back we realized that we had a lot of firsts.
When Burlington was his home base, Senator Chris Smith was the first senator we met, he stopped by often. Now we have Senator Dianne Allen, the first woman senator we have met, she likes the ice cream too. The first commercial we were a part of was actually filmed in the Ice Cream Parlor with former Governor Christine Whitman. She loved the Mint Chocolate Chip, I think she had six throughout the day of shooting. The first and only time we sold out of ice cream was Wood Street Fair 1982, although we would not mind you helping us to do that again. Our first Best of Philly award, we would not mind doing that again either. Our first time doing a simulcast on regional television with Fox News’ Sue Serio doing Sue’s Clues during the morning weather - That was an early day!
The first family, not related to us, that had all their children work here, THANKS Joy Family. Over the years we have done well with keeping that tradition going. For the last twenty six years we have not had a single season without a member of the following families working at UMMM’s. The Joy’s (2), Coughlin’s (3), Lovett’s (3), Umstead’s (2), Sullivan’s (3), Smith’s (3), Cipollone (2), Lihvarcik (2), Haines’ (2) and currently with the last members of these families Camarda’s (3) and the Derita’s (2). We have also begun to further that tradition with the possible continuation (no pressure) with my brothers family and the Spadero’s. We also had our first second generation employee, first we had a Carson then a Carson-Jones. If I forgot anyone I am sorry, it has been twenty six years after all.
You have also shared a lot of your firsts with us. Your first ice cream cone or maybe your first Take-A-Boost (Sorry if you got addicted). Countless first dates! With Upstairs at UMMM’s, we have helped celebrate the first day as husband and wife and also the first year of your child’s life. We have been that great reward for your first day of school, the first tooth you lost and your first of many more honor rolls. We have helped you through your first pregnancy with our Mint Chocolate Chip and for some of you, your second, third and fourth.
